Set several decades after the events in the popular Blood: The Last Vampire anime film, an amnesiac Saya Otonashi lives as a seemingly normal high school student with her adoptive family in Okinawa. Horrible nightmares are the only hints at the violent life she once led, but her past is about to catch up with her and awaken the merciless warrior within.
Chiropterans–powerful shape-changing creatures who need and crave blood-threaten humanity once more, and a mysterious organization called the Red Shield needs Saya’s deadly sword skills and mysterious powers to aid in the fight against these beasts. As her submerged abilities begin to reawaken and as she seeks to regain her memories, Chiropteran warriors are guided by a mysterious leader to threaten Saya and her loved ones.
I’m a bit skeptic on Dark Horse’s description because all I know is that Blood+ is an alternative version of the original OVA.
Anyway, this manga is a condensed version of the TV series, removing some of the most important plot points. But likewise, the fates of the characters are altered, such as Riku, George and Solomon, while the other characters’ personalities changed such as Nathan and Karl, who is a kid in this version. And other supporting characters end up having small roles or not showing up at all such as Mao, James and the Schiff.
So far, I’m glad that Riku and George didn’t die and Haji is more expressive in this version. But I dislike how the mangaka made Julia the punching bag. For example, when someone got abducted (like Riku), Saya and co. always find Julia beaten up. -_-
Anyways, I prefer the anime better because it gave more screentime to the characters. This manga is bloodier and gorier than the anime. Well, not much gorier than Blood-C.
